Spring is coming. Service should be completed as early as possible. No one wants to miss anytime on the water waiting for service. Here are a few tips recommended for all of you with outboard motors. We are ready and willing to get you boat ready for a great season. Please get on our service list ASAP, by calling us today!

Maintenance - Outboard Engines

Recommended Maintenance
Outboard Engines
Only perform maintenance that applies to your engine package.
Every Use 
  • Check engine oil level (4-strokes only)
  • Check for leaks (water, fuel, oil, exhaust, etc.)
  • Check remote control & steering for proper operation
  • Check fuel system for deterioration or leaks
  • Make sure kill switch lanyard stops the engine
  • Check propeller blades for damage
 Weekly 
  • Check battery condition, connections, & fluid level
  • Check water pick-ups for debris & marine growth
 First 20 Hours 
  • Check all electrical & ignition connections
  • Check emergency kill switch, clip, & lanyard
  • Check over all screws, nuts, clamps, etc.
  • Check fuel & oil system components
  • Lubricate all lubrication points as needed
  • Change gear case oil (gear lube)
  • Check power trim/tilt fluid
  • Check power steering belt, fluid, & filter
  • Check steering & shifting operation
  • Lube prop shaft & re-torque prop nut
  • Disassemble, inspect, & clean fuel filter
  • Change engine oil & filter (4-stroke only)
 Every 100 Hours or Annually 
  • Check all electrical & ignition connections
  • Check emergency kill switch, clip, & lanyard
  • Check over all screws, nuts, clamps, etc.
  • Lubricate all lubrication points as needed
  • Change gear case oil (gear lube)
  • Check power trim/tilt fluid
  • Check power steering belt, fluid, & filter
  • Check steering & shifting operation
  • Lube prop shaft & re-torque prop nut
  • Disassemble, inspect, & clean fuel filter
  • Change engine o l & filter (4-stroke only)
  • Check anti-corrosion anodes - replace at 50% corroded
  • Inspect & clean spark plugs - replace as needed
  • "System check" self-test & check warning horn operation
  • Re-torque transom mounting 40 ft. lbs.
  • Check engine timing setup & timing belt
  • Replace compressor air intake filter (if applicable)
  • Replace water separating fuel filter (DFI & EFI only)
  • Check & clean air silencer
 Every 200-300 Hours or 2-3 Years 
  • Disassemble & inspect sea water pump - replace warn components as needed
  • Lube splines on driveshaft
 Beginning of Every Season 
  • Summerizeincludes: reconnect & charge battery if needed; run engine
  • Check for water leaks on engine & make sure engine is cooling properly
  • Check shifting & steering
  • Check all fluid levels
  • Check horn, navigation lights, etc.

End of Every Season - Winterize (as performed by Ben Watts Marina) 
  • Stabilize fuel
  • Run engine in antifreeze tank
  • Fog engine
  • Check gear case oil (gear lube) & change if necessary
  • Spray engine with anti-corrosive spray as needed
  • Disconnect battery
  • Remove hull plug
